Have you ever thought about walking a tightrope? In Tsovkra, an isolated village in the mountains in southern Russia, the people do this every day! Our travel reporter spoke to one of the villagers about this tradition.
How did it start?
No one is sure, but this is what people say: Hundreds of years ago, the men of the village walked long distances to meet young women on a nearby mountain. They became tired of the journey so someone had an idea – to put a rope across the valley between the two villages. Then the men pulled themselves along the rope. One day, a brave young man began to walk on the rope. It was risky. But since then, all the men have learned to do this.
How did your village become famous?
After the Second World War, some of our best tightrope walkers left Tsovkra to perform in Russian circuses. We were so proud! Many of them won the highest awards for their acrobatics. There was a family team of a father and his seven daughters. They stood on each other's shoulders on the tightrope.
What is the situation today?
There is a tightrope walking school in Tsovkra. People of all ages practise walking on a rope above the ground. In fact, my wife was a tightrope walker and our son will continue the tradition.
Is there a future for tightrope walking?
Oh, yes! But, there's a lot of competition, especially from China and Japan.
